Rock-O-Mama!

The night before last, I pulled out this book:

... and my kids got their first formal introduction to Barack Obama.

Now, for my children, as with most of his followers, Barack Obama is a rock star.

“That’s ROCK-O-MAMA!” Zip cries out every time he sees a picture of our new president.

On the way to speech class, while listening to the news leading up to the inauguration, Tizzy asks: “Why are the people yelling?”

“Because they’re excited for Barack Obama.”

“They’re very proud,” Tizzy replied.

“Do you remember why?”

“Because Barack Obama is going to be the next Present!”

Later that afternoon, he was talking to one of his friends.

“Rocco? Do you know who Barack Obama is?”

“Yes, he’s the new President,” replied fellow four-year-old Rocco.

“That’s right.  He’s the new Presenter.”

Zip is completely enamored with Obama’s magnetism.

“Show me the movie ‘bout Ba-Rock Bama!?”

“Ba-Rock Bama likes cannons?” He asks after watching the end of the inauguration speech for the 25th time in a row.

“Dat’s his Michelle?” He asks after begging me to play the first dance over and over again.

They’re equally smitten with Malia and Sasha.  When they see pictures or videos of them, all they can do is giggle.

Today, we were in the car with the radio on, and the announcers were talking about Obama’s first day on the job.

“What are they talking ‘bout Ba-Rock Bama?” Zip pipes up from the back seat.

“They are talking about laws that Barack Obama is putting into place. Laws are like rules. The president is the person who protects and guides our country, and just like your teachers at school, it’s the job of the president to keep everyone safe and to treat everybody fairly.”

“Yeah,” Tizzy said. “Barack Obama doesn’t allow ANY hitting in the White House!”

That's cute that they're so enthralled. I keep trying to teach Graham how to say "Obama" and he says "BoMama" instead. It's cute though. I haven't seen that book, I'll have to check it out.

No hitting in the White House? One other difference from the Clinton White House: no smashed lamps, either ;)

I love it! My daughter called herself K. Obama! It's been fun for the kids. She also at times calls him Rock Omama!

Mine have finally figured out his name is NOT Baracko Bama. My daughter was thrilled to recognize "Simple Things," and spent the afternoon singing.

Jake told me last night he likes to call him "Rock Obama." Guess he really is a rock star to these kids! I love it.

I read this whole post with a huge grin on my face! Those boys of yours sound adorable, and I love who piqued with interest they are, in their own way, with our new President. Maybe this will spur their own interest in politics one day!

Isn't it great to have your kids interested in the government? This was the first year that Maddy was into the campaigns and election (although we weren't Obama fans). So now we are discussing how we hope Obama will help the country.

Something tells me that McCain wouldn't have inspired this kind of interest and excitement in children. How great is it that we have a president who does?!

As always, thanks for sharing. :]

Here's "my" 2-year-old expressing his enthusiasm and excitement:

So sweet. My teens asked to skip school to watch the inaguration. The one with excellent grades stayed home. The other went to school. And the one at home watched. all. day. long! (I know because I skipped work to watch.)

My students seem pretty enthralled with President Obama too. The first graders are still trying to figure the whole thing out, but I commend you for educating your kiddos about this courageous man. Most parents of my students have not done so, and I feel like I've been spending a lot of time trying to fill in the gaps for them.

Perfect. I wish mine could feel some of that excitement. We've been talking about it but they just don't understand nor is there the momenum up here. But it all is equally important.

I saw that book at the book store the other day, and I almost bought it, but I didn't because I figured Little Bear would never sit for it. Barack sure has a lot of fans, of all different sizes!!!!!

Inspiring! I wonder if the great man himself has any idea? Actually, he probably does!

Both of my kids (4 and 6) are full enthralled in all things Obama....even during the "events" of Tuesday, my 4 year old danced around the living room singing "Obama-doodle-bop"

Ok, whatever!

Have you thought about sending this story and the previous one about the "present", to our new President? I think he would really appreciate the sentiment and it could be another way to teach the boys about reaching out to our governing representatives.
Just an FYI: http://www.whitehouse.gov/
I just recently started looking at this site....I'm sure it's had more visitors in the past week, than during the past 8 years.

P.S. Serena, you're doing a marvelous job with those two young men. Hugs! your Cuz-J

My little guy is totally enamored, too. He and his entire school wanted the inauguration. One heck of a history lesson!

We watched the entire morning on TV at school! And then a week later, today a kindergartner asked me "when is President Obama going to get Peached?"

I replied, "Hopefully never!"

peaches sure can be sticky :)

I love seeing this brave new world through the eyes of our little ones. It's so fun to see their perspective!
