The boys and I have started our summer garden. I've turned the soil in the planter boxes, we've added worm castings and worms from our compost, and today we started planting the seeds. Most of our vegetables will be planted in the main garden, but, I read that to prevent diseased tomatoes, you should not plant them in the same spot for three years! I don't have enough room for that kind of rotation, so, we got some planter buckets and I'll just change the soil in the buckets each year. I took a tip from Sus over at Wigglerooms, and added banana peels to the soil in my planter. They're supposed to make the tomatoes taste divine. Thanks Sus!
While Zip and I were filling the buckets, the mystery paparazzi (His name begins with T) got in a few practice shots, so, Woo-Hoo! Pictures of me!
Then Zip kicked me out and took over with the trowel, which he's claimed as his own.
We had a great time, and I was glad to be teaching my boys about growing their own food, but, before you think it was all roses and sunshine, I heard myself more times than I'd like to count saying, "Agh - Gah - Watch the flowers. Hey - ack! Don't you see those?! Hey I have an idea... Why don't you go to your house and make me some soup?!" Then I went and ate some "Ivy" soup and pudding and it put me in a much better mood. Are you planting a garden? – Follow me over to my reviews, for a way to give back this summer and a chance at an awesome giveaway.

I think that the perfect day is filled with sun, seeds, dirt and kids.
and perhaps a martini.......
We are planting our veggies next weekend!! I can't wait...
Thanks for the shout-out but I totally froze my tomatoes with this smart idea. (We both wrote about gardening this week.) PLEASE TELL ME YOU THAWED THE BANANAS BEFORE PLANTING. Oh, of course you did. That stunning picture of you makes it crystal clear that you are way smarter than I.
Send me the recipe for the ivy soup and pudding. My kids planted our beans and about 3 out of 30 came up.
:)
I was feeling foolish for waiting until May 15th to "avoid chance of frost" until Wednesday night when there was A FROST!
We're putting out some of our seedlings and sowing some seeds today (I hope the sun comes out; it's so dreary today).
Do you just toss the banana peels right in the soil?
I love Zip's gardening ensemble!
A couple weeks ago, I "helped" 14 preschoolers plant marigolds in paper cups for their mothers. I quite believe I said many of the same things you did with all the help they were giving me!
Best day of the year. Especially if you're an, um, snappy dresser.

I am thinking the boot/pull-up combo is going this summer's hottest look.
I like the idea of a garden and actually want one but I just don't know how.
It may or may NOT be a good thing, having a limited garden. When I was growing up, living on a farm, Ma used an entire acre for the family garden. And what a harvest it beheld every fall. And got canned, bottled, pickled and preserved. We were still eating from it middle of the next summer.
Though, with THAT much dirt, Zip and Tiz might keep you busier than you could imagine ;)
I crave a garden! I've got to give it a go this year. I'm completely clueless as to where to begin - our yard is not great for it as we have flooding issues. But dammit, I want my vegetables!
I'm not the gardening type but my parents are and Graham LOVES helping them. It's so cool to see kids outside vs glued to the TV. And your boys look like great helpers!
It is so good for kids to get their hands in the dirt and learn the process of growing food. We're planting soon, a couple weeks from now, and I end up with the neighbourhood kids helping too. Sure the rows aren't straight but they sure get a kick out of it.
Zip is a fashion god.
Have you ever done a smelling garden for the boys? One summer we did chocolate mint, lemon verbena, etc. Then the girls knew they were free to pick the leaves and crush them and smell them. They loved it. Oh for the innocent days. *sigh*
1)You and your incognito pics crack me up!
2) When I garden, I get so totally lost in my thoughts, I actually drool.
3)I'm very worried about my garden this year because the dogs (and then there were two) are trashing it. It makes me gnash my terrible teeth.
4)I absoluetly love the way you parent.
Nothing like a little naked gardening. Its just too bad that as we get older people frown on planting in your skivvies.
Yes I'm planting.
Well okay my GARDENER is.
What? I'm not goin' out there in all that sun...jeeeeez...
Get me a martini...I'm with Vodka. We go everywhere together....
This looks like my idea day... It's how I spent Mother's Day, in fact :)
I don't garden but my husband has several vegetable and flower gardens. I'm glad the kids see to also like to garden. I like to cook and eat what they grow and enjoy looking at and picking the flowers.
I love the boots with the pull-ups!
And I know exactly what you mean. They love gardening but then they don't watch their step - it can make you crazy! Glad you survived!
It's still too cold to plant here - it SHOULDN'T be mind you, but it is... argh... I wait, not very patiently, for the warmth!
