Pecking Order

At the dinner table —

Tizzy: What's steak?

Me: It's cow.

Tizzy: No. What's Stea-aaak?

Me: It's cow.

Tizzy: Cow?!

Me: Yep.

Tizzy: Oh. Well then I'm never going to eat steak.

Brad: How about pigs. Would you eat a pig?

Tizzy: No. I would never, ever eat a pig.

Brad: Would you eat a chicken?

Tizzy: Chicken?! Oh yes! Chicken is delicious!!!

Poor chicken - it's the only animal that shares a name with the food we make from it.

I probably have told this one before, but it never fails to make me laugh...

Lorenzo announces, "I will NOT eat any meat. I HATE meat. Can I have a hot dog?"

My oldest is 12 and we STILL have these discussions about the meat on his dinner plate most nights. "Now, when you say chicken, what exactly do you mean by chicken?"

Sigh...

We have chickens. They have names. Sugarplum would still eat them if they held still long enough.

ha! I love when kids realize that meat is animals. I have a boy who won't eat fish because it's a fish, crabs because they are crabs, shrimp because they are shrimpses, chicken because they are chickens, but cheeseburgers and nuggets? Oh hell yes.

Yes, well chicken. That makes total sense, of course!!

Funny how the little guys make up their mind early in life. Mine wouldn't eat meat unless it was surrounded by pasta. Oh well.
