Spring Cleaning - Or Spring Training... You Decide

It's hard to jump back on the horse after not blogging for a month and a half.
There's a lot of self imposed pressure to come up with something REALLY interesting to say.
So, what do I have for you today?
Chores.
Interesting, Eh?

When I started blogging, I was so overwhelmed by parenting babies that I felt I could barely keep up. I went through most of my day in a fog and then in the middle of the night when the boys were finally down, I couldn't sleep. I found solace in other peoples blogs and I could catch up with you all at four in the morning if counting sheep had left me in the dark.

There were so many things on my to do list, but after nursing babies, changing diapers, washing laundry, and laundry and laundry, I felt I could barely brush my teeth much less clean out the garage. So, while I gritted my teeth at the clutter, I found solace in reading that the rest of you were going through it too. While I wondered if I'd ever get my energy back, I did find that sitting down at the computer at the end of the day and typing left me feeling like I'd accomplished something for myself which was gratifying and helped remind me that I hadn't completely lost my mind.

A couple of weeks ago, we watched our neighbors kids while they went out. They're two and four. It's been easy for Brad and I to think that we're getting better at the parenting thing as the boys have gotten older, but when that two year old went zooming through our house, dumping out toy boxes, splashing in the toilet and screaming when we finally told him it was time for bed, we recognized that our parenting isn't getting better, our boys are just getting older.

Phew!

With that has come more energy and also more sanity. I'm beginning to feel like myself again and trying to cross more off my to do list. After six years, my to-do list is not small. So, after the lengthy job of painting the kitchen, which I still need to update you about, I have been taking on more manageable tasks and trying to incorporate more of a schedule so that my to-do list doesn't rule my days.

In the past Brad would take the boys out during the weekend and I would clean the house. I would like to reclaim my weekends. So last spring I came up with a list. It details all the chores I'd like to get done in the month and has a check off spot for the number of times I'd like to complete that chore. My hope was that by doing at least one of those chores, twenty minutes each day, I'd have a pretty clean house. So far I have yet to follow through. Today, the first of March, I've decided to take on the Spring Cleaning challenge and complete the full list by the end of this month, the first month of Spring.

Don't get me wrong, my house is not a disaster, but I find that while I have type A desires, I have a distractible mind. I'd like to create a healthy medium, and know that my house is running smoothly so my distractions have more room to play.

Here's my list:

What a great way to stay on top of things. I think that I need a list.

I play along on a semi-similar list. I find that on the days I work, I have to come home and do something on a to do list right away rather than sit down for a few minutes that inevitably turn into far more than few. I find that even doing 20 to 30 minutes of something in a chunk makes me feel a little less overwhelmed than normal. Not to say I don't have grander plans and wishes for clearing this place out, but I'd rather do a little bit at a time than so I can hang out with the boys, too!

Okay, from a seasoned mom (now grandmom) and someone who works at home, my best suggestion is to get a phone with a headset that you can wear while talking. I have learned that I can dust, make up beds, water plants, wipe up spills, clean doors and numerous other tasks while either talking with a colleague or a friend. This particular type of multi-tasking doesn't diminish the conversation or the drudge work, and you get to check off two things at once! What's not to like about that?

Sigh.... If you all do this I will have to... hire a cleaning person, lol! I am a person who needs down time and if I don't get it I find I do what you did Serena- stay up all hours of the night just to get some relaxation! So, the house goes. Every once in a while I go on a binge and remember how my Mom would do spring cleaning- wash all of the windows, wash all of the walls, the curtains, the blinds.... then a few years later I might do it again!
Seriously- I know what you mean about the kid getting older and us getting better- totally.
Glad to hear that it's all good things keeping you from blogging- good to hear from you again!

I do this too, and I actually give myself those shiny star stickers as a reward!

ANd just wait til they're 9 and 7 like my two, ZOMG life is easy now! Plus you can make THEM tidy up their room! I need to make a list of things that NEVER get done like vacuuming under our bed or cleaning the windows, but I have this sneaking suspicion that once I write the job down I'll actually have to do it.

I used to be good at lists, but I've slacked off. Now my house looks like it.

I need to do something. My house is increasingly untidy and my project list, from tiling the laundry room to ripping out the carpet in the second floor, is just getting longer and longer. The only time I can really do the projects is in the evening and I am just so worn out. If only we could have a cleaning service again. Sigh. Maybe someday.

Thats a great way to make sure that everything gets done regularly, so you don't get overwhelmed by having to do it all at once!!!

Wow Serena! You are totally organized! I can't wait to hear how this goes. I have also called March my month to do spring cleaning (and my taxes)! So far, no success- but it is still early in the month. -vivi

March must be list month. I made a list of 10 items to do for 30 days. (I even got the Mr. to make a list too!) It's not all cleaning related, but a good portion of it is. We're really only on day two of the 30 days - so I can't claim success yet. But here's hoping for all of us!

No. I do not want to play. Because that is *not* play. That is *work*.

Can't you hire a slave or something?
